A choreography for the immaterial

INVISIBLE is an exercise in perception. A choreography looking for dance beyond human movement. Elusive elements such as light, water, and air are given body and voice, emerging as transient presences.

A fragile, silent dance is revealed, surrounding and permeating human experience. The research proceeds through subtraction, working at the edge of the sensory threshold to bring forth the ephemeral nature of ungraspable bodies.

What if dance were a slit of light? A way of making the invisible visible, for a brief moment only, before it disappears again?

Andrea Salustri’s work seeks dance beyond the human body. He pursues a de-anthropocentric approach to choreography.

INVISIBLE is the result of poetic research on perception. This research stems from an observation: human relationship with the environment has become unsustainable. In the era of the Anthropocene, everything is considered a resource, either to be exploited for profit or as an ornament. In order to rethink our relationship with the environment, it is urgent to shift the way we perceive it.

This shift can happen through a practice of listening and noticing our surrounding. For years, Salustri has been working and choreographing with discarded objects, giving them agency, exposing their movements and their voices. His previous show, MATERIA, is dedicated to polystyrene, one of the most disposable and problematic materials, which is met on stage with care and fragility in order to facilitate a re-encounter. In INVISIBLE, Salustri turns his gaze to the elements that constitutes the very premises of human perception: light, air, and water.

By listening to the sound of water and witnessing the dance of light and wind, INVISIBLE shows that choreography can be so much more than human movement.
